The definitions
The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which makes it 3.785411784 liters. The kitchen units divide it evenly: a quart is 1/4 gallon, a pint 1/8, a cup 1/16 (236.5882365 mL), a fluid ounce 1/128 (29.5735295625 mL), a tablespoon half a fluid ounce and a teaspoon a third of a tablespoon (4.92892159375 mL).
The UK’s imperial gallon is bigger: exactly 4.54609 liters, with 160 imperial fluid ounces and 8 pints of 568.26125 mL. A US pint is about 473 mL, so a British pint is about 20% more. US nutrition labels round a cup to 240 mL.
