The definitions
Since 1959 the inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, which fixes every US length unit in metric terms: a foot (12 inches) is exactly 30.48 cm, a yard (3 feet) is 0.9144 m, and a mile (5,280 feet) is 1,609.344 m. A nautical mile, used at sea and in the air, is exactly 1,852 m.
Because these are exact, conversions here are too: 100 inches is 254 cm with nothing rounded. Going the other way usually isn’t a whole number (1 cm is 0.393700787… inches), so those answers are rounded to 10 significant digits and marked with ≈.
