Questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15% to 20% of the bill is usual for table service at a restaurant, with 18% to 20% common now; 20% or more for excellent service. Bars, delivery, taxis and hairdressers are often 15% to 20% too. Customs differ a lot between countries, and many add a service charge to the bill instead.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually say before tax, since tax isn’t part of the service. To do that, enter the bill amount before tax. Tipping on the after-tax total adds only a little: on a $100 meal with 8% tax, 20% is $20 before tax or $21.60 after.

How does rounding work?

“Round the total up” rounds the whole bill plus tip up to the next dollar, and the tip absorbs the difference. “Round each share up” makes every person’s share a whole number of dollars, handy for paying cash. The calculator shows what the tip becomes as a percentage of the bill.

What if the bill doesn’t split evenly?

Money only splits to the cent, so $100.01 between three people is $33.34 for two of them and $33.33 for the third. The calculator tells you exactly who pays what, so the shares add up to the total.

How do I work out a tip in my head?

For 10%, move the decimal point one place left: 10% of $64 is $6.40. Double it for 20% ($12.80), or add half of it for 15% ($9.60).

Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Your numbers appear in the page address only so you can share the split with the table.
