The definitions
Temperature scales differ in both the size of a degree and where zero is, so converting means multiplying and adding: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Water freezes at 0 °C (32 °F) and boils at 100 °C (212 °F) at sea level.
Kelvin starts at absolute zero, the coldest anything can be: 0 K is −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F, so K = °C + 273.15. Rankine is the Fahrenheit-sized equivalent, used in some US engineering. Kelvins are written without a degree sign.
Questions
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 (or 1.8) and add 32. 20 °C × 1.8 = 36, plus 32 is 68 °F. A rough version in your head: double it and add 30.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. 98.6 °F − 32 = 66.6, and 66.6 × 5/9 = 37 °C, normal body temperature.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?
At −40. −40 °C is exactly −40 °F.
What are common oven temperatures in Celsius?
350 °F is about 177 °C (recipes usually say 180 °C), 400 °F is about 204 °C (200 °C) and 450 °F is about 232 °C (230 °C).
Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
No. Conversions are worked out in your browser. The value and units appear in the page address only so you can bookmark or share them.
