GPA calculator

Grade point average on the 4.0 scale, by credits, with Honors and AP weighting if you want it.

Include earlier courses (cumulative GPA)

GPA

3.48

Credits
13
Quality points
45.3

How we got this

  1. Grade points × credits for each course: 4 × 3 + 3.3 × 4 + 3.7 × 3 + 3 × 3 = 45.3 quality points
  2. Divide by the total credits: 45.3 ÷ 13 = 3.48

This is the scale most US high schools and colleges use. Some schools use different steps (a few count A+ as 4.3, or don’t use minus grades), so your transcript is the final word. The GPA is shown to two decimal places, rounded half up.

Questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each grade is worth a number of grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiplied by the course’s credits to give quality points. Add up the quality points and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit A and a 3-credit B give (16 + 9) ÷ 7 = 3.57.

What is a weighted GPA?

Many high schools add extra points for harder classes so that taking them doesn’t lower your GPA: commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment college courses, so an A in AP counts as 5.0. Policies vary, so check your school’s; an F always counts as 0. Colleges often recalculate GPAs their own way.

What is an A+ worth?

At most US schools, 4.0, the same as an A, so the maximum unweighted GPA is 4.0. A few schools give 4.3 for an A+; this calculator uses the common 4.0.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Open “Include earlier courses” and enter your GPA and credits so far. The calculator combines them with this term’s courses, weighting each by credits: 3.2 over 30 credits plus a 3.5 term of 6 credits is (96 + 21) ÷ 36 = 3.25.

Do pass/fail or withdrawn classes count?

Usually not: pass/fail, audited and withdrawn (W) courses carry no grade points and are left out of the GPA, though an F in a pass/fail course sometimes counts. Leave those courses out here, or leave the grade empty.

Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation happens in your browser. Grades and credits appear in the page address only so you can bookmark them; course names are never put there.
