The definitions
Speed units are a length per time, so they follow from the length definitions: 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h, 1 knot (a nautical mile per hour) is exactly 1.852 km/h, and 1 m/s is 3.6 km/h. 60 mph is exactly 88 feet per second.
Ships and aircraft use knots because a nautical mile is based on one minute of latitude, which makes distances on charts easy to measure. Wind speeds are given in knots, mph or km/h depending on the country.
